1. Unisoft Inc. wants to upgrade the OS of all Windows 7-based desktops in the Accounts department to Windows 8. The organization does not want to reinstall the existing applications on the system. In addition, the organization does not have extra storage space to save the existing data of systems. Identify and explain the installation or migration scenario in the preceding situation. In addition, list and explain the other migration scenarios.

The deployment scenario in this case is in-place deployment scenario. The need for an in-place desktop deployment arises when an organization decides to upgrade the operating system and applications on its existing desktops. In this process, the previous desktop is either upgraded or redeployed. Therefore, you need to preserve the existing user state before deploying the new OS so that the user obtains the same user state on the new OS. This will ensure that the user productivity is not hampered because of a change in the desktop, and no time is lost to adapt to the change. In addition, it ensures that in case the deployment process fails, the user data and settings can be restored easily on the desktop.

The other deployment scenarios are:

·         Wipe and load

·         Side-by-side

2. Describe the different guidelines that one should follow before starting the deployment of an OS on a larger number of computers.

To plan the successful and efficient deployment of desktops, you need to consider the guidelines for the following factors:

1. NetStars Inc. wants to upgrade the OS of all Windows 7-based desktops to Windows 8. However, before upgrading to Windows 8, the organization wants to check the hardware and device compatibility with Windows 8. In addition, the organization wants to create a comprehensive report of Windows 8 hardware assessment, hardware summary, and machine inventory results. Identify and explain the tool that you can use for creating the preceding report. In addition, list and explain other tools that you can use for assessing the network within the organization.

The tool that can be used in this scenario is MAP. MAP is an effective toolkit for inventory
evaluation and reporting. It can run in any business environment and does not require any
supporting software. The reports generated by this tool clearly indicate the readiness of hardware,
thereby simplifying the planning phase. If you want to upgrade the desktops in your organization by
using MAP, you can scan the network infrastructure of your organization and create an all-inclusive
report, which contains extensive hardware and software information. It also helps in determining
whether the desktops are ready for deployment by providing migration readiness reports.

2. Technotics Inc. wants to upgrade the OS of all Windows XP-based desktops to Windows 8. However, the employees of the organization are using various applications that are developed according to the specifications of the Windows XP architecture. These applications may not run if the systems are upgraded to Windows 8. It means that the applications may also need to be changed or upgraded with the OS. This will be a time-consuming task. Therefore, the organization has assigned you the task of analyzing the compatibility of the currently running applications prior to the deployment of Windows 8. Identify and explain the application compatibility process and the tools that you can use for the same. In addition, identify and explain the components of the network infrastructure that you need to assess while planning for desktop deployment.

The application compatibility process involves the following stages:

1.             Identifying the applications that need to be tested for compatibility with the new OS in a testing environment
2.             Running the applications on the new OS in a testing environment and identifying the incompatibilities
3.             Resolving application compatibility issues by using the tools provided by application vendors
4.             Deploying the applications and distributing the application compatibility solutions to the testing machines for hosting the applications
5.             Identifying the post deployment application compatibility issues that might arise, creating solutions, and distributing solutions

The tool that can be used to check application compatibility is Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT). It helps you to check the compatibility of the existing
applications including line-of-business applications with the new OS, which you plan to deploy on the desktops.

3. Describe different types of application compatibility issues. In addition, explain, in detail, the tasks that you need to follow to check and resolve application compatibility issues (if any).

Some of the compatibility issues encountered are:
·         Setup and installation issues

·         Permissions issues

·         Miscellaneous issues

Setup and Installation Issues

During or after the installation of the existing applications on a new OS, the following problems may arise:
·         The level of security or permissions may change in the new OS. This may prevent the application from being
installed successfully due to insufficient security permissions. For example, features, such as User Account
Control (UAC), may prevent an application from creating files and folders in the system partition. As a result,
the installation process of the application fails.

·         Different operating systems have different locations for saving the application settings. For example, the
applications settings are stored in the Documents and Settings folder in Windows XP, whereas the same settings
are stored in the AppData folder in Windows 8. The changes in the folder structure may cause conflicts, such as
the application settings may not be available to applications on the new OS.

·         The application writes directly to the registry without using installation programs or Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs). This may cause problems due to the security features of the OS, such as UAC, which may prevent
the application from writing data to the registry and cause it to malfunction.

·         The application requires only a specific version of the OS to be installed.

Permissions Issues

Permission issues arise when an application writes to an area in the file system or registry that was accessible in the
earlier OS, but is not accessible in the new operating system. Usually, applications are allowed access only to the following areas:

·         Certain registry keys in Windows, such as HKEY_CURRENT_USER

·         User profiles, such as the Documents folder and personal settings

·         Shared document folder

·         Any folder created by the application where it is allowed to write

Miscellaneous Issues

The following miscellaneous issues may be encountered by the applications:
·         The new OS may consume more memory than its previous versions. This may limit the amount of memory available for
running applications, causing them to crash due to insufficient memory.

·         Shared system files are deleted or overwritten during the installation of an application. At the time of overwriting
a system file, no check is made to verify the authenticity of the new system file.

·         The list of supported hardware devices is changed. Therefore, the hardware devices whose entries have been
deleted are not supported by the application.

·         The list of supported fonts is changed because of which the application is not able to access the fonts whose entries have been deleted.

·         Certain services or applications have been withdrawn from the new OS. The applications that require those services or applications will
not run on the new OS.

1. StatTrix Inc. wants to upgrade all its Windows 7 desktops to Windows 8. The company has welldefined IT policies that are enforced by different processes and technologies. After upgrading the OS of all the desktops, the company plans to install some new applications on all the desktops. For this, the company wants to automatically distribute the applications on all the desktops. Identify and explain the desktop deployment level of the company. In addition, list the other deployment levels of organizations.

The desktop deployment level of the company is rationalized. The rationalized level signifies that the organization has a
proactive strategy for its IT functioning. The IT policies are well-defined and enforced by different processes and technologies.
This level ensures the most cost-effective infrastructure state. It involves partial automation for deployment and engages
centralized, mission critical servers to deploy OS and applications in a well-managed and secure manner. The rationalized
level ensures compatibility of existing applications with the desktop on which the applications need to be deployed. It
also ensures that the organization keeps a well-maintained inventory of OS and applications. In addition, the rationalized
level organizations support automatic software distribution on the newly deployed desktops.

The other deployment levels are:
·         Basic
·         Standardized
·         Dynamic

2. NETcom International Inc. is a software development company located in Ohio. In one of its branch offices, the company has 40 desktop computers with the Windows 7 OS installed. Recently, the company has decided to upgrade these Windows 7 desktops to Windows 8. This task has been assigned to Robin, the System Administrator. Robin plans to configure a standardized image to deploy Windows 8 on all the desktop computers. To deploy the standardized image quickly, Robin wants to implement a method that will automatically supply the desired basic configuration options, such as the product key and personalization settings, during the deployment of the OS. Identify and explain the deployment method that Robin can use in the preceding scenario. In addition, list the other methods of deploying an OS.

The answer file-based deployment method can be used in this scenario. This method is used in environments where you need
to deploy more than one OS at a time. Answer file-based deployment can be performed in conjunction with the media-based
and network share-based deployment methods. It can also be used with image-based deployment method. This method does not
require you to specify the inputs for the different OS settings manually at the time of installing OS.

The other deployment methods are:
·         Media-based
·         Network share-based
·         Image-based
·         Automated image-based
·         Windows To Go
·         Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

1. What are the different phases of the desktop deployment lifecycle? Explain each phase in detail.

The different phases of the desktop deployment life cycle are
1. Planning
2. Purchasing
3. Buiding
4. Deploying
5. Upgrading
6. Retiring

2. Harry is a System Administrator at Acme Inc. He needs to deploy the Windows 8 OS on 12 new desktops, which the company has bought for the new employees. However, he does not have the physical CD/DVD of the OS to perform the deployment. Instead, the source files of the OS are stored on a network server in the organization. Which desktop deployment method should Harry use to perform this task? Explain the method in detail, along with the other methods of performing desktop deployment.

The deployment method that can be used in this scenario is network share-based deployment method. This method uses a
network to share the source file of OS. Network share-based deployment is used in situations where the basic Local Area
Network (LAN) connectivity is available. This method is typically used in small organizations where simple workgroup-based
networks are available. However, this method can also be used in medium or large organizations.

The other methods of deployment are:

1. Media-based: This method uses media, such as CD and DVD, for deployment. Media-based deployment is suited for environments
that do not have a centralized mechanism for deploying desktops, or the infrastructure of the organization is not
suitable for other deployment methods. However, a media-based deployment can also be performed at different locations
of a business enterprise where a mechanism for centralized desktop deployment does not exist.

2. Answer File-based: This method is used in environments where you need to deploy more than one OS at a time. Answer file-based deployment
can be performed in conjunction with the media-based and network share-based deployment methods. This method does not
require you to specify the inputs for the different OS settings manually at the time of installing OS.

3. Image-based: This method requires you to create an image of the OS by using an image creation tool and deploying the image on a target computer.
This method is typically used in medium to large organizations.

4. Automated Image-based: This method is used to reduce the time for installing an OS and automating the OS image deployment process. Automated
image-based deployment requires dedicated imaging servers, such as System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) server, to
create and deploy OS images. This method is typically used in large organizations because it requires high network
                          bandwidth and dedicated servers.

5. Windows To Go: Windows To Go is a feature of the Windows 8 Enterprise OS. The Windows To Go feature allows you to install the complete Windows 8 Enterprise OS
on a Universal Serial Bus (USB) storage device, and then run the OS right from the storage device. This allows users to carry the entire OS and
the applications installed on it in a storage device, enabling portability. Using the Windows To Go feature, the Windows 8 Enterprise OS can be
run on any desktop that supports running of the Windows 7 OS.

6. VDI: In VDI, an OS is deployed on virtual machines running on a server in the organization’s network. This means that the deployment needs to be performed
only on a single machine, that is, the server. This minimizes the cost of deployment and reduces the maintenance-related overheads of the IT staff.

The different deployment levels are:
1. Basic
2. Standardized
3. Rationalized
4. Dynamic

1. Basic: The basic level signifies that the organization is retaining its IT functioning as a reactive strategy. This means that a change is introduced
only when there is a problem. The systems in such an organization are generally incompatible with each other and are complex. In addition, these
systems do not provide their services to the entire organization and are limited only to a small domain. The basic level organizations do not follow
any standard or predefined policies. There are no formal procedures for desktop deployment, management, or security. Desktop deployment is usually done
          through media.

       # At this level, the organization does not maintain a standard approach of deploying desktops. The basic level can be identified by the following drawbacks:
       # It has a nonstandard desktop deployment method, which results in complex and tough management of desktops.
       # Patch management is never planned and is inconsistent. This increases the vulnerability of the desktops to security threats, such as virus and Trojan attacks.
       # Deploying or upgrading a new desktop is a manual process that is done with the help of CDs or DVDs.

2. Standardized: The standardized level signifies that the organization has a proactive strategy for its IT functioning. It has a centralized control over system resources.
The automation of system and processes is available, but at a basic level. This level is implemented through policies and standards to manage desktops and servers.
However, the systems are still expensive, incompatible, and complex. Usually, all software deployments and patch updates are done through a medium touch approach.
This type of desktop deployment is usually done through media or network shares.

3. Rationalized: The rationalized level signifies that the organization has a proactive strategy for its IT functioning. The IT policies are well-defined and enforced by different
processes and technologies. This level ensures the most cost-effective infrastructure state. It involves partial automation for deployment and engages centralized,
mission critical servers to deploy OS and applications in a well-managed and secure manner. The rationalized level ensures compatibility of existing applications with
the desktop on which the applications need to be deployed. It also ensures that the organization keeps a well-maintained inventory of OS and applications. In addition,
the rationalized level organizations support automatic software distribution on the newly deployed desktops.

4. Dynamic: The dynamic level signifies that the organization has a proactive strategy for its IT functioning. Such organizations prefer maximizing their business agilities, rather than
saving cost. At this level, some of the decision-making processes are decentralized to bring decision-making closer to the business process. This level ensures highly automated
            and flexible systems.

Desktop deployment, at this level, can also be done in a small or medium organization, but it is more appropriate for a large organization. The network infrastructure in a large
organization is state-of-the-art, with all the latest technology implementations. A dynamic organization utilizes the latest technologies to maintain and synchronize the desktop
deployment status throughout the network. The dynamic level ensures structured approach and defined processes for testing and validating the applications, updates, and patches in a network.

4. Praxis Corp. is an IT organization that frequently implements new hardware and software technologies to fulfill the latest requirements of its customers. For this, the management of the company often decides to upgrade the computer systems. As a result, some of the hardware components need to be replaced. These replaced hardware components must be properly managed and disposed of to ensure minimum risk of environmental damage. You have been assigned the task to device an appropriate solution for the preceding challenges. How will you accomplish the task?

Identifying Green ways of Disposing E-waste

Computer components can be difficult the dispose of. A number of computer components, such as CMOS battery.
cannot be easily disposed of. you need to task extreme precaution ans disose of computer components as per
the guidelines suggested by the manufacturer.
Computer components can be either disposed of or recycled. Depending on the type of computer component, you
need to task appropriate actions. For example, a monitor can be recyled by the computer manufacturer However, a CMOS
bettery cannot be recycled. therefore it needs to be properly disposed of.

Disposing computer Components

The life cycle of computer componenets is usually less then two years. thereafter. the parts become obsolete and are usually
discaeded. these obsolete computers, when dismantled. genrate E-waste in the form of hundreds of componenets.
Heavy metels, such as mercury and lead. and other toxic compounds in the e-waste to get into the environment and create health
problems, such as cancer. A proper way to dispose of E-waste is to drop it in specific E-Wastecollection centers set up by the
govemment agencies of equipment manufacturers. you can also donate them to some educational organizations where students can work
on these computer. the educations and Non-Govermmental Organizations (NGOs) do not require high-end equipment as compaered of those of
compared to those of companies. therefore, large companies donate old equipment to such organizations.

the united states Envinment protcation Agency (US EPA) encourages recycling and reusing of used electronic products by imposing less strigent
regulations for recycled and reused products. in contrast, the products disposed of in a hazardous manner face stingent regulations. in several
state that either the manufacturers provision for recovery programs are mandatory. in the US, the E-Waste laws state that either the manufacturers
provision for recycling programs or specifie items are not considered trash.

The European Umon and a few states in the Umted States, through legislation have made manutecturers of electronic equipment
responsible foe the recycling of these products. organizations must ensure that the their e-waste disposal process is in
accordance with the local laws and regulations to related to the disposal of e-waste some of the green disposal considerations for computer components are:
1. Laptop batteries deserve extra considerations while being disposed of as they contain toxic elements that are harmful to human health
some electronic stores offer battery recycling programs.
2. Printer components, such as cartridges toner and ribbons deserve extra caution during disosal as they may contain residual ink particles. the priter ink
particles may contain harmful chemicals and may be inflammable. Reusable cartridges and toners should be used to reduce wastage.
3. The disposal of CRL monitors is federally regulated because of the amount of lead they contain Disposing of more then a certain amount of CRL monitors
can become costly because of the documentating required. state environmental laws also come into factor into disposal decisions and costs.

5. Acme Corp. is an IT organization that is facing stiff competition from its competitors. To succeed in such a competitive environment, the organization needs to ensure that it spends a minimum amount of resources on: Infrastructure investment Electrical power Operating expenses In addition, the organization wants to implement an environment-friendly solution as a social gesture. The Administrator of the organization has been assigned the task to find an appropriate solution to meet the preceding requirements. How will the Administrator accomplish the task?

Understanding Virtualization

Virtualization is a technology that helps in adstracting computer resources in a virtual form. It creates an
environment similar to a host mechine. It helps in saving both, hardware and software resources, by utilizaing the
same resource usedby the host machine. in virtualization, when you abstract the hardware resource by using an
application, the hardware resources become available to another computer that the runs the virtual state.
Virtualization is achieved by using an application or technology, such as VMware Workstation. virtual BOX, or
Hyper-V.

The virtual form of a computer is known as a virtual machine. A virtual machine operates like a physical
machine, but dose not require its own separate physical hardware. Depending on the hardware resources, such as
microprocessor, memory, and haed disk space, you can run multiple virtual mechine within a single physical
computer. therefore, depending on the hardware capabilities of a physical machine or a host machine, you may
be able to run a single vitual machine or simultaneously run multiple vtual machine on a comuter.

To understand this concept better. consider an example. Assume that you have a computer that has 8 GB of
RAM 500 gb of haed disk space, and a network adapter card. you run a client operating system, such as
Windows 7, on this computer, Now, you need to experiment with Linux. In the absence of vtialization. you can
format the existing Windows insallation and insall Linux or dual-boot with Windows and Linux Dual-bool
can enable you to have two or more operating systems on a single computer, but you can run only one of these
operating systems at a time.

However, by using vitualazation siftware, such as vitual box, you can run Linux in a vitual machine within Windows.
Vitualazation helps in green computing because only one physical computer consumes electical energy. Vitual machine
utilize resources from the physical machine, and therfore, do not require a separate energy channel to
be powered on. Due to this, large enterprises have turned to vitualizaion and converted their phusical servers
into vitual machines. Virtualization privider the following key benefits:

1. Reduced space requirements: Virtualization allows organization to consolidate multiple physical machines
into a single physical machine. As a result, organization require less space for setting up comuters.
2. Optimal resource usege: Virtualization can lead to a better usage and distribution of computing resources
among users. in case of multiple physical machine, the computing resources of each physical machine may
   not be used completely.
3. Energy conservation: Virtualization can lead to reduction in energy demands due to reduction in the amount
of physical hardware component. the vitual machine. which are simulated on a physical machine. do not
require any additional power. therefore multiple users can be supported by a single physical machine, with
lessr power requirements. In case of multiple physical machine, each machine would require a separate
power supply, and therefore, More power would be consumed pen user.
4. Consolidation of consolidation: Consolidation of servers is the process of adding multiple servers on a single host.
for example, you can add vitual machine that act as a printer server, a Wab server a file server, and an
email server on a single physical host. the consolidation of server also helps in consolidation multiple
Underutilized servers on to a single, High-end, physical host.
